How will you make an impact in this role?
The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (“GRC”) is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.

By partnering closely with business units across the enterprise, we help deliver maximum value to our shareholders and our customers through effective risk management and oversight activities.
GRC’s Enterprise Third-Party Risk Management (ETRM) hired recently a new Director and is now hiring a new manager to drive the establishment of a new team to provide governance and oversight for Third-Party Risk policies and frameworks across American Express. ETRM is part of the Operational Risk Management group of GRC and is responsible for identifying and managing third-party risks across all business units, functions, processes, and geographies at American Express. The team assists in the identification, measurement, monitoring, and management of risks related to the business, products and processes.
The new team will develop a governance framework with associated policies, standards and framework documents to manage the Third-Party risks across the company globally. Once established, the new team will own and maintain that framework and associated policies, standards, and procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Support the development, implementation, and enforcement of an enterprise third-party risk governance framework.
- Support the development and issuance of regular third-party risk governance reporting to senior leaders and/or appropriate risk committees.
- Review and provide guidance to first line stakeholders as they develop/maintain procedures to implement the third-party risk governance framework.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree is a plus.
- Experience with Risk Management governance required, specifically in creating and implementing risk management policies and related program and framework documentation.
- Third-Party Risk Management experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in risk, compliance, legal, or regulatory roles. Equivalent top-tier consulting experience in these areas is acceptable.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.
- Able to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities under tight timeframes, as well as to adapt to frequent change and shifting priorities.
- Able to collaborate across teams, geographies and departments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Able to lead and influence without authority derived from band level.
- Rigorous, analytical and structured approach to prioritization, decision-making and problem-solving.
- Experience in project management is desired.
